East - West Postal War
The Postal War between the Federal Republic of Germany, the GDR (German Democratic Republic) and Poland.
The visual presentation of undesired events on postal stamps by the above referenced countries, as well as West -Berlin, agitated the normal flow of postage and spilled into
the era of the Cold War.
The GDR, Poland, Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union, together, refused to process mail having attached the following commemorative stamps:
Michel Cat.#165 German Prisoners of war
Michel Cat.# 215 10th Anniversary of the Expulsion of Germans from their eastern territories
Michel Cat.#479 Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the murder-annihilation and expulsion of 12 Million Germans from their
eastern territories.
These stamps were defaced unrecognizable with black paint.
The Federal Republic also refused to process mail from the GDR bearing the stamp commemorating the 10 anniversary of the Berlin Wall, calling it the “Anti- fascist Wall of
protection”

Historical footnote:
The first recorded event of a postal war dates back to1896, in which a dispute between Great Britain and Venezuela erupted.
